Miller 3rd at USGP #5 Kaiser keeps leaders jersey

Meredith Miller rode to an impressive 3rd place in yesterdays Mercer Cup C-2, race 5 of the USGP of Cyclocross. With Luna chix Katerina Nash off the front, Miller found herself sandwiched between Luna chix riders Georgia Gould and Alison Dunlap. with 2 laps to go Gould and Miller came together with Miller passing Gould but a slight bobble by Miller let Gould back in and the podium was set. Nash 1st Gould 2nd and Miller 3rd. Miller also picked up a little extra spending money by winning the SRAM most aggressive rider award.

Miller 4th, Weighall 5th in Providence

Meredith Miller started her 2009 cross season from the back row of the the Woman's Elite race at the Providence Cylocross festival, but she didn't stay there for long. Miller bolted through the field and found herself picking off riders until she settled into a battle for 3rd place with Richard Sachs rider Amy Dombroski. The two duked it out for 3 laps until Dombroski came around on the final up hill sprint to take the 3rd spot on the Podium.

In the Men's Elite Race Nick Weighall used a fast start to work his way up from the back row and fight his way to a solid 5th place overall. Weighall drew cheers from the crowd as he bunny hopped the barrier section of the awesome Roger Williams Park course.

CHECKPOINT TO SHARE MESSAGE OF SAFETY AND COURTESY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Theresia Rogerson, MPH

August 27, 2009 Work (831) 454-4312 theresia.rogerson@health.co.santa-cruz.ca.us

CHECKPOINT TO SHARE MESSAGE OF SAFETY AND COURTESY

SANTA CRUZ - August 2009 - A pilot “Share The Road” educational checkpoint will be set up in Live Oak at East Cliff Drive and 30th Avenue on Saturday, September 5, 2009, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. While road users stop at the stop sign, safety information will be distributed describing how motorists and bicyclists can safely “Share The Road.”

The checkpoint will be a collaborative effort between the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency, the California Highway Patrol, and Ecology Action. As part of the efforts of the Community Traffic Safety Coalition (www.sctrafficsafety.org) and through a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety, funded through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the checkpoint is part of a program designed to increase public awareness about the rules and responsibilities for both bicyclists and motorists.

The checkpoint will be modeled on those coordinated by the Marin County Bicycle Coalition with the goal of promoting safety, mutual respect, and fair and equitable enforcement of the rules of the road for all modes of transportation. The focus will be on utilizing existing law enforcement and health services resources to promote the “Share The Road” message through awareness, education and enforcement.

“Our goal will be to raise the awareness for both motorists and bicyclists that sharing the road can only be achieved through a shared responsibility,” says Captain Christina Manriquez of the California Highway Patrol. “This includes being predictable, courteous and utilizing defensive techniques while following all traffic laws.”

We all know that motorists become impatient when bicyclists run stop signs. And bicyclists become angered when a vehicle passes them too closely. To help ease these tensions and promote mutual respect and safety, this pilot checkpoint will emphasize the need for road users to be even more diligent now that many of our children will be walking and bicycling to school.

Any motorist or bicyclist stopping at the checkpoint will be given an educational handout to help explain their legal rights and responsibilities on the road. All road users will be encouraged to obey all traffic laws. Using their discretion, officers will cite or warn traffic violators for any offenses observed. The educational checkpoint is intended to raise community awareness, reduce collisions and promote safety.

Moore 2nd at NCNCA Districts, Miller wins Timpani

Jesse Moore was nipped at the line by Bissell Pro Cycling rider Paul Mach. Moore, Mach and Fabrice Dubost from Webcor escaped the group and took it to the line with Mach taking the win and Moore settling for 2nd. Moore's teammate John Hunt was 4th and Steve Reaney 5th.

Sunday's Timpani Crit in Santa Clara was all Keith Miller! Miller took the win after his lead out train of Steve Reaney and Patrick Briggs blasted him to the line. read the race report below

Patrick, Steve and myself suited up for the Timpani Crit today, always your standard well attended local industrial park nor-cal crit... We've won this race the past 3 yrs running.
Rode over from the LG and met up with Steve and Patrick a few moments before the biking contest and figured with 10+ LGBRCs and 10+ Webcors and some wind we should go with everything since Patrick had said in the masters race (WHICH HE WON!) the break went on lap 2 and that was all she wrote... If it came down to a kick I was the guy (who decided that should have their head checked)

At only 65 minutes and a banging tailwind on the home stretch breaks would go, get to the back stretch head wind and sit up....everyone is fresh when it's short and everyone can attack with a tailwind....
Anyway, 5 to go and it's pretty much all together... 4 to go and Webcor is on the front with Steve, Patrick and I set up on them, with some Z-team guy trying for Pats wheels... Really guy? Really? think I'm giving you that?? ha. With 2 to go a Webcor tries to go across to a lone Metrominter and dangles......With one and half to go we unleash the Reaney and he rolls it for the next lap with the rest of mortals staring at the cassettes in front of us, last half lap Patrick takes over and gets us through the final two corners in fine style.... Off Patrick's wheel with a long tailwind kick to go...snuggle up to the 11 and 4 in a row for Cal Giant it was!

Steve and Patrick did it ALL! if I hadn't finished it up the my bike would be in a dumpster right now and I'd be walking home.....

In my best NASCAR interview style I'd like to say that my Specialized bike, powered by Sram with the Zipp 808s and TRP brakes with my smooth as ice Enduro bearings all performed flawlessly today and none of it would be possible without the support of California Giant Berry Farms who are the best grower/shipper of the finest berries in the world and Anthony Gallino, team director extraordinaire.

Here's to finishing the season strong gents!

Elite Nationals Recap

The 2009 Elite Road Nationals didn't turn out very well for the Berries! In fact it was down right disappointing and a huge let down in terms of the high standards expected. The Berry Boy's rode a fantastic race until the last 3K and then completely fell apart on the plan, due to inconsistent team work and a lack of communication. With 4 berries in the last group of 15 riders at the top of the final climb, we settled for 8th, 9th, 11th and 13th.It was a tough pill to swallow but hats off to the Winner,Mike Olheiser who turned in a great ride to take the Jersey!

EATING STRAWBERRIES BOOSTS BRAIN POWER

Latest Research Provides More Reasons to Eat America’s Favorite Fruit

Watsonville, CA (July 29, 2009) – Strawberries are good for your brain, according to breaking news out of the 2009 Berry Health Symposium. Several of the latest studies, conducted by world-renowned researchers, consistently showed that strawberry consumption is a simple way to improve cognitive function.

For example, one study presented by researchers from the Chicago Healthy Aging Project (CHAP) showed that older adults who consume strawberries at least once per month have less cognitive decline. More specifically, women who consumed more than one serving of strawberries per month had a 16.2% slower rate of cognitive decline versus those who consumed less.

With increasing age, brain function diminishes. This has been conclusively shown in laboratory studies, by Drs. James Joseph and Barbara Shukitt-Hale of USDA Agricultural Research Service at Tufts University. Their latest research at the conference demonstrated that aging results in deficits in learning, memory and motor function, such as balance and walking speed – and concluded that strawberries and other berries improved both memory and motor function.

Berries Can Preserve Brain Function

Researchers from the 2009 Berry Health Symposium described how berries may be contributing to the preservation of brain function. Most disease processes in the body are believed to begin through inflammation and oxidation which damage cells. Healthy nerve cell membranes promote optimal communication within the brain and nervous system so preventing membrane damage from inflammation and oxidation is essential. Numerous antioxidant substances have been identified in berries.

Prevention of Dementia in an Aging Population

Dementia is the loss of cognitive function of sufficient severity to interfere with everyday tasks. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It is estimated that one in eight persons, aged 65 and older have Alzheimer’s. There is no cure for the disease and treatments are ineffective.

According to recently released census estimates, the world's 65-and-older population will triple by 2050 to make up 1 in 6 people. The number of senior citizens has already increased 23 percent since 2000 to 516 million, more than double the growth rate for the general population. As a result, the incidence of dementia is likely to rise.

The frequent consumption of berries is emerging as a potential simple dietary factor for prevention.

California strawberries are grown and available year-round in supermarkets across the country.

More information and the research abstracts from the 2009 Health Benefits Symposium can be found at www.berryhealth.org.

Cascade Update

Well, you can't really call the first two stages a stellar start of one of the toughest stage races in the US for the Berries. In stage one, lack of communication and a some bad timing caused the berries to miss the move that ended up being the the winning move with all the main GC threats in it. The berries settled in somewhere around the @4min mark when it was all said and done.

Stage 2 didn't bring any better luck when the new team car decided it didn't want to go any further and had to be towed back to the local Bend dealer. Riders really like it when they have 50 miles to go and there is no team support car. Thanks Volvo!

Moore Wins Leesville RR

Jesse Moore won the Leesville RR for the 2nd year in a row this past weekend. read his race report below

The annual running of the Central Valley’s worst roads went pretty much according to the usual playbook. With the temps back up to help thin out the heard, the race included the usual “it’s not if you’ll cramp, but how bad” element. Main difference this year over previous years, was that the main players of the day ended up in the early move long before the bumpy part. James and I took turns covering and somehow I end up off the front with 6 others including Maximus Jenkins and a big gap. Max went to work showing us all how to ride northern Europe style roads and a couple mountain bikers were showing off their rough road and gravel prowess for a few miles with a solid rotation and I’m comfortable knowing James is getting the free ride in whatever chase is happening. Near the base of the climb Mike Taylor has brought a small chase group nearly up to us with James in it, but Max smells the uphill and hits off again hard. Vincent Owens and I go with, but in the early slopes of the climb, youthful exuberance and a short memory for how long the climb is have Max pushing watts I can’t hold. I give him the required “I’m dropping them, so I can ease off” gap and hold steady with Vincent in tow and James bridging. By the top I’d closed back to Max, James had caught Vincent a little ways back and the field was shattered along the slopes in little groups behind them. That was pretty much the way the race stayed to the finish. Somehow there was a headwind in every direction as usual and the last 15 miles haven’t gotten any more scenic. Anyhow, Max jumped me a couple times in those last few miles and then stopped rotating from several k out so I casually brought us to the finish doing the math on me having more torque, but him having less mass to accelerate to decide what speed I wanted to lead out the sprint. Last few hundred meters he starts trying to drop back on me so I just keep slowing down to force him to stay close. He gets impatient and jumps. Less mass is winning briefly, but he gave me plenty of time to hold him and come back around. James was fourth in the next group. Hopefully two firsts helps wash away that second I botched a couple years ago. Mike Taylor was still talking about that on Friday…

Reaney Wins Pescadero RR!

Steve Reaney rode to victory Saturday at the 12th Annual Pescadero Coastal Classic. Below is a brief race report.
Once again this was another team win that Reaney was the benefactor of. Entering into lap two it was still aggressive. A few attacks here and there. The move went from a counter off Z-Teams Nate English on the second pitch on stage road. Chris Turner was along for the ride and gladly pulled through when Reaney looked back to check what was going on, Dan Martin bridged shortly after and they never skipped a pull til the end. The object at that point was simply to wear down the favorites in the field as their teammates were already looking pretty worked.
Time gaps were sketchy. first lap from the officials was at 1:30, Then a bit later 3 minutes! going into the third lap was 5 minutes!
"The guys did a great job of shutting down the favorites" stated Reaney. "We backed off even more in the break realizing we need to save something for the last lap..... We were nice to each other agreeing to take it to the final climb. I had hoped that I could get second out of the scenario and first if Dan Martin flatted"

To the final climb - neither Martin-Safeway or Turner attacked. "About half-way up I realized I was feeling the freshest of the three of us. The thought of victory started to creep in, but I kept it in my pants still not sure of what Martin might unleash. 1K to go, no attack. I am thinking I can suck it up for 3 minutes, maybe. Then Dan attacks. I covered it, poor Chris was dropped. Dan attacks again, I covered and the 500 to go came up. This is where I thought to myself I might win (Dan later told me he thought the same). To this point I had taken a back seat up the hill, but then I pulled through to set a easy tempo. Saw the 200 meter to go sign and I started my sprint right after it. Looked under my arm expecting to see Dan trying to pass, but surprisingly I had a gap.....

This race was about:
1) team work - I knew you guys were back there so I did not have to kill it for 2.5 laps. Once the gap was established I settled in, did my fair share, but knew the options behind were as good.
2) fitness and energy management- all of us in the break backed off when we realized the gap was big. Knowing it was better to go faster toward the end instead of killing ourselves to go 1 mph faster. My endurance is apparently pretty good right now - I wish my speed was equally up to par...
3) nutrition - constantly ate before I got hungry and drank before I was thirsty....

sorry about the long report.

Thank you Jesse, Ozzie, Adam, Julian and Keith for having confidence in me - the feeling is mutual. I know it can be harder in the field than in a break.

England 2nd in Stage 4 at Mt Hood Classic

Justin England took 2nd in the up hill drag race to the line in the Stage 4 Downtown Hood River Criterium. England escaped with 10 riders to gain a 30 sec advantage on the Bissell controlled field. Bissell protecting the yellow jersey was content to let the break roll. England and Teammate Adam Switters kept the break rolling until 3 laps to go when the attacks came. England, Aaron Olson-Oakley/Sidi, Jamie Sparling-Trek/Red truck and Corey Collier-Team Rio Grande got away to bring it to the line. Sparling nipped England at the line for the win.

Justin England took 3rd today in the Stage 1 Shimano Cooper Spur Circuit Race at the Pacific Power Mt Hood Cycling Classic. England took 3rd spot on the podium coming in behind the Bissell tandem of Paul Mach and Morgan Schmidt. When the early breakaway blew apart on the third lap of the 5 lap race leaving Safeway/Bicycle Plus's Dan Martin solo with a 4 min gap, the chasing main group led by Bissell, ZTeam and California Giant made the catch just inside 5k from the finish. The attacks started and England went with the first group." I went with the 1st group and kinda popped, but was able to recover and pick guys off as I made it back to the leaders"stated England. England moves up to 7th overall in the GC just 28sec off the lead. "It was a good day,The team rode well together today, everyone chipped in and we got a spot on the Podium!" said Director Anthony Gallino. The Berries moved into 2nd place overall in the Team competition

Miller wins Santa Rosa Corp. Criterium

Keith Miller picked up the win in yesterdays Team Clover Corp Criterium. Keith report is below

35-40 guys for 90 minutes of fun, about 12+ Norcal Guys and 4-6 LGBRCs were the big squads...
Klein, Touchstone and some other players

About 15 or so minutes into the race 2 norcals got up the road, a group behind formed and then they had 3 up the road, some hard pulls and a group with me, Klein, touchstone and a few others made 9 that were away and we were gone.....dropped a few who were hurting and with 30 minutes to go we lapped.... some reshuffling and with 15 minutes to go 7 of us (all of whom were a lap up) got away, me, Klein, an LGBRC and a CVC, rolled around and into the last lap a norcal jumped and had a good gap, I hit out to get up to him, Klein came as well, we got up to the fellow and Klein went straight around and told me let's go, nice style, out of the last corner and a good long sprint for me to wind up and the W was mine.

A good hard day out, norcal had 4 out of 9 that lapped and the best they did was 4th, some serious tactical miscues on their part put I certainly benefited.

Time for bed and to do it tomorrow again!

Have fun in Tulsa boys and Tyler, GOOD TO HEAR YOUR HOME!

Reaney wins SugarCRM Memorial Day Crit

Steve Reaney took the win today at the SugarCRM Memorial Day Criterium in Morgan Hill. Teammate Keith Miller hit the gas with 1K to go and delivered Reaney to the line for the win. Reaney was quick to praise his teammates for their overall performance. "At 2.5 laps to go it was obvious it would be a field sprint. Ozzie and Jared took it to about 0.75 lap to go. They never panicked and never overextended. Beautiful. Then Keith took over when a surge went at 0.75 laps to go. I was certain it was too far from the finish for one guy to handle..... But I was wrong. Dropped me off about 20-30 meters before the last turn at 55-60 km/hr and made me look way faster than I am...."

In Sundays SugarCRM Mt Hamilton Classic the berries put 4 in the winning move, but failed to come away with a podium spot.

Berries for Gila

left_pic.jpg

The California Giant Berry Farms cycling team will be competing this weekend at the Tour of the Gila in Silver City , NM. This 5 stage road race has been a favorite of the team for the past several years, but this year might be a little more memorable for the riders. The incentive to win this year is even greater as the Cal Giant riders get the opportunity to finally race against seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Race organizers confirmed that Lance Armstrong is returning to competition at this week’s Tour of the Gila in New Mexico after recovering from collarbone surgery. After initially being barred from riding in the five-day event because of an International Cycling Union (UCI) rule, Armstrong was subsequently cleared to compete as an individual.
For twenty-three years the Tour of the Gila has remained one of the State’s most challenging early season stage races and is renowned for its tough climbs, hot weather, and fast professional fields, the 2009 hilly five day stage race begins this April 29 in Silver City, NM. Riding for California Giant will be James Mattis, Justin England, Jesse Moore, John Hunt and Ozzie Olmos.
Riders and spectators in Silver City, NM will also have the added benefit of purchasing California Giant strawberries at the local Wal-Mart Supercenter. Be sure to visit www.calgiantcycling.com to keep informed on the race results and how the Cal Giant riders stack up against the legend.

California Giant Berry Farms Launches Traceability Pilot Program

California Giant Berry Farms Launches Traceability Pilot Program

California Giant Berry Farms, a leading berry grower and shipper in the United States, will deploy HarvestMark® solution for unit-level traceability of strawberries next week. HarvestMark codes on California Giant strawberry four-pound clamshells will deliver instant trace-back to its buyers and new levels of information to consumers interested in learning more about the products they purchase.

“We take great pride to ensure quality, flavor and customer service every day.” said Cindy Jewell, director of marketing. “As an industry leader in food safety and quality practices implementing HarvestMark in this initial program extends our ongoing food safety program and creates a dynamic channel to tell our story and deliver valuable information to our customers.”

HarvestMark traceability Codes found on the 4lb. California Giant strawberry clamshells can be entered at www.HarvestMark.com for instant access to harvest data, country of origin, grower profiles and other information that such as recipes and health and nutrition information. California Giant and its growers can also obtain on-demand information on product quality feedback and time to market, which can be correlated to the farm, crew and date, to enhance product management and enhance an already strong food safety program. California Giant chose to launch the HarvestMark as a pilot program first to ensure success throughout the system from field to consumer before rolling out the complete program to all pack sizes in all regions.

“California Giant is one of the leaders in the berry category, and providing traceability will only further elevate the great experience buyers and consumers have come to expect with the California Giant brand,” said J. Scott Carr, president and CEO, YottaMark. “We’re excited to be working with one of top berry producers in the country to help launch its traceability initiative with HarvestMark.”

The company selected HarvestMark for its pilot program on traceability because of their leading traceability platform for fresh produce. The HarvestMark solution includes both item-level and Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI)-compliant case-level traceability. With HarvestMark, shippers can deliver on-demand access to harvest, distribution, quality, and food safety information, when and where it’s needed. HarvestMark is in use today by dozens of produce growers and shippers across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico who have chosen the platform to easily deploy effective traceability across a wide range of produce products.

Mattis 7th at stacked field for Copperopolis

James Mattis finished 7th in Saturdays Nor Call epic! James race report is below

I ended up 7th.

BJM 1st, Nydam 2nd, AJM 3rd, Fabrice 4th, Nate English 5th. Holloway 6th.

Flatted just before the 1k to go sign at the end of the third lap. Got a slow wheel change and then chased forever back solo. Thought my day might be done, but somehow managed to claw my way back to the group about half way up the climb that lap. Sat on for 10 seconds before someone attacked. Made a profound excursion deep into the pain cave to get into a group over the top and chase back on. Couldn't do anything when BJM and Nydam took off midway through the 4th lap. Got clear with Fabrice (Webcor) before the feed zone on the 5th lap and got caught by AJM and Nate English about half way through the lap. AJM got away on the final climb, and Fabrice and I dropped Nate English and I was looking good for 5th, but then flatted for a second time, and the follow car was out of rear wheels. Got passed by both Nate English and Dan Holloway on the descent as I gingerly went through the corners riding the flat home. Managed not to crash and held off the group to take 7th.
